A Royal Welcome for Dice-K
Well, after months of insanity, Daisuke Matsuzaka made his first regular season start for the Boston Red Sox. The hype for this game was just ridiculous,
as both the American and Japanese media took hold of it and ran and ran and ran. Cameras have surrounded “Dice-K” (that’s how we Americans spell and pronounce his name) every moment since he’s arrived here. He’s been heralded as the next great MLB pitcher, who’s wicked hahd stuff would make Pedro look like, well, Hideki Irabu :). Needless to say, all eyes would be on Matsuzaka today, as he faced the Kansas City Royals.
While Dice-K didn’t show off the legendary Gyroball, he did wow the crowd with a stellar performance. On a chilly day where the young pitcher could have faltered…he brought it. In the end, he had an impressive line:
| Boston | IP | H | R | ER | BB | SO | HR | ERA |
| Matsuzaka (W, 1-0) | 7.0 | 6 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 10 | 1 | 1.29 |
10 Strikeouts…1 Run. You can’t say much more. He baffled the opposing pitchers with a variety of
off speed pitches, nasty curves and breaks, and some heat. He was dominant in the middle innings as well, striking out the side in the fourth, and sitting down Emil Brown on just 3 pitches. I think we just got a taste of what’s to come, but if this is any example of what the man from the land of the rising sun can bring, it’s going to be a fun year for all of us.
I’ll be traveling up to good ol’ beantown next Tuesday for Opening Day…hopefully Matsuzaka-san will be on the mound.
