Wax Off
“First learn stand, then learn fly. Nature rule.” - Mr. Miyagi
The great sensei must have been thinking about the internet when he said those famous words. If basic podcasting is like standing, then Waxxi’s interactive podcasts are like flying…
Earlier, I wrote about today’s Waxxi Interactive Podcast, with Jimmy Wales. I just logged off the chat and have to admit, I’m very impressed. For about 45 minutes, a group of about 200 ‘castmembers’ were treated to a personal chat with Jimmy. Questions ranged from the differences between Wikipedia and Wikia to Jimmy’s take on search algorithm transparency, politics, Google, and wiki vandalization.
While Jimmy might have been the “star” of the show, Waxxi and its innovative interactive format certainly deserves a best supporting actor nod. Guests could participate in both an online chatroom as well as on a conferenced phone line.
The chat was moderated by Tracy Sheridan of Waxxi, who performed the job masterfully like a great conductor, bridging the worlds of phone callers, online chatters, studio guests, and staff into a fluid experience for both Jimmy and the guests. The event was reminscent of a good talk show where the host and guest interact with both a live studio audience as well as with phone in callers. Besides a brief audio glitch, the event moved along smoothly and quickly…I only wish we could have stayed longer to hear more from Jimmy.
I’m definitely looking forward to the next Waxxi event. They’re doing something very unique and special. As I told Tracy after the event, I’ve never felt so drawn in to an interactive online event like I was today. For an hour, I felt like I wasn’t even sitting at my desk, but rather as a part of a live studio audience. Suddenly, listening to TWiT on the train ride home just doesn’t sound as exciting as it used to…
Congrats Tracy and Waxxi on throwing a great event!

Thank *you* for such a prolific couple of posts about Waxxi. You've really painted a beautiful picture of what we are doing. I'm thrilled that you finally had the opportunity to experience it, and that you enjoyed it so much.
In hoping we have a Waxxi regular in you, front row seating for the next 'cast is yours. :-)
